About the G1 knowledge test

The G1 is the first step of Ontario’s graduated licensing system. To get it, you pass a vision test and a written knowledge test at a DriveTest centre.

What the test covers

  • Road signs: regulatory, warning, temporary-condition and information signs.
  • Rules of the road: traffic lights, right-of-way, pavement markings, turns, parking, licence conditions and safe driving.

Practice tests on this page use the same split as the real test: 20 sign questions and 20 rules questions, and you need 16 of 20 (80%) in each part to pass.

G1 driving conditions

  • Zero blood-alcohol level.
  • An accompanying driver with a valid Class G (or higher) licence and at least four years of driving experience must sit in the front passenger seat.
  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • No driving on 400-series highways with a posted speed limit over 80 km/h, or certain high-speed expressways, unless accompanied by a driving instructor.
