About the Class D licence

A Class D licence lets you drive a motor vehicle over 11,000 kg gross or registered gross weight, or a combination where the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kg. It also covers Class G. Add a Z endorsement (DZ) for trucks with air brakes.

On the road test

  • A daily inspection of the vehicle.
  • Backing (offset or 90-degree alley dock).
  • On-road driving: turns, intersections, lane changes, expressway, curves and roadside stops.

If your truck has air brakes, also practise the Air Brake (Z) test.

A Class D licence with a Z air brake endorsement. It lets you drive heavy straight trucks equipped with air brakes, such as dump trucks.

What is the towing limit on a Class D licence?

The towed vehicle must not exceed 4,600 kg gross or registered gross weight. Heavier trailers need a Class A licence.

Does the Class D road test include coupling?

No. Tractor-trailer coupling and uncoupling is part of the Class A test, not Class D.
