About the Class A knowledge test
A Class A licence lets you drive a tractor-trailer or other combination where the towed vehicle is over 4,600 kg. Most drivers also add a Z air brake endorsement, which makes the licence an AZ.
Before your Class A road test
- Complete Ontario’s mandatory entry-level training (MELT): at least 103.5 hours of instruction.
- Meet the medical and vision standards for commercial drivers.
- From January 1, 2027: you must have held a Class G or higher licence for at least 6 months before taking the Class A road test.
- Since May 11, 2026, commercial licence applicants must provide documents proving Ontario residence, legal presence in Canada and eligibility to work in Canada.
Also practise the Air Brake (Z) test if your truck has air brakes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Class A and AZ?
Class A is the licence class for tractor-trailers. The Z is a separate air brake endorsement. Most tractor-trailers have air brakes, so most drivers hold both, written as AZ.
Is MELT training required for Class A in Ontario?
Yes. Ontario requires mandatory entry-level training of at least 103.5 hours before an applicable applicant can take the Class A road test.
What does the Class A knowledge test cover?
It is based on the Official MTO Truck Handbook: inspections, hours of service, coupling and uncoupling, load security, dimensions, safe driving, plus road signs.
Do I need my G licence before Class A?
You need a valid Class G or higher licence to apply. From January 1, 2027, you must have held it for at least 6 months before the Class A road test.
